About Susquehanna EMS

Susquehanna Township Emergency Medical Services, Inc. (STEMS) has been providing ambulance service to the residents of Susquehanna Township, Penbrook and Paxtang Boroughs for over 50 years.  Originally a volunteer effort on behalf of Progress area residents and civic groups, we now boast both career and volunteer staff handling over 3,500 emergency 9-1-1 calls each year.

All of our responders are certified Emergency Medical Technicians and many also serve as EMT instructors, emergency vehicle driving instructors, CPR and first aid instructors, etc.  Many still volunteer with local EMS and fire departments.

Advanced Life Support (ALS) is provided by Community Life Team of Harrisburg.  Currently, through an agreement, Community Life Team provides Paramedic staff and equipment on our Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU).

STEMS responds on a mutual aid basis to any community in the central Pennsylvania region as their ambulances respond to ours.  As the number of ambulance services continues to dwindle, this becomes much more vital.

In addition to our emergency call volume, we handle greater then 4,000 non-emergency wheelchair and ambulance transports each year.  This service is available Monday through Friday, from 5 AM until 11 PM and helps meet a large community need.

Our Community Training Institute remains busy providing CPR, First Aid, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and related response training to business and community groups in the region.  As part of the American Heart Association training network, we train and support instructors for nursing personnel, police and fire departments.

Don't have time for a class?  You can now recertify CPR/AED on-line through the American Heart Association.  Bring in your certificate and do the skills here!  Individual skills testing is held Monday through Friday, from 9 AM until 1 PM.  Please call to make an appointment.

We are governed by a community board of directors who meet monthly to review our activities and provide advice and direction to our administrative staff.  The administrative staff consists of:

  • Raymond J. Barth, Executive Director
  • Bradley DeLancey, Operations Chief
  • Beth Miles, Asst. Chief and Field Training Officer
  • Elizabeth Leonard, Business Manager
